RESPECTFUL ATTIC ADDITION
A well cared for and nicely detailed cape cod style home had unfinished attic space. The owner dreamed of having the lovely view through the trees be the focal point of the new primary suite. There was enough space to add a sitting room in addition to the full primary suite. By expanding on the existing front gable feature, the first floor bay window was preserved while an organic roof swoop highlights and shields the front entry. A shed dormer tucks just behind the dramatic gable to allow daylight to a new primary bathroom. Care was taken to preserve the house’s exterior materials of stone and natural stained shake siding, blend into the existing lush gardens and the pedestrian scale of the neighborhood.
Inspired by the owner’s colorful African art collection, the primary suite bath is the star of the show. With its colorful natural variation, the handmade floor to ceiling tile is a dramatic focal point. The colorful backdrop sets up a moment of contrast with the grey limestone console sink. The matte brass fixtures add a brightness and a sparkle to the otherwise moody palette.
The remainder of interior renovation includes small touches throughout the house, but the more significant spaces include a kitchen remodel as well as finishing the lower level.
The kitchen grew by closing off a secondary access to the basement stairs as well as opening the wall between the kitchen and the dining room. The primary challenge was to remain within the footprint, but brighten and liven the space. The marble counters and backsplash act as a neutral palette for the bold wallpaper and art collection from the homeowner. The brass hardware and fixtures coordinate with the custom handles on the range and fridge.
Much of the lower level was finishing and cleaning up otherwise unfinished space. With the goal of creating an entertaining space, the focal point of the lower level is the tucked away bar. Charcoal grey cabinets play on the low light of the lower level with a glass shelf to display glassware while having it on-hand.
This project was all about modernizing and updating a cape cod without losing the charm of the original design. A scattering of updates throughout the house allows the owner to continue living in their neighborhood for years to come.
