RETREAT AND RECHARGE
Contemporary Craftsman is a primary bathroom in a 1990s custom-built home, along the edge of a wooded marsh. After 30 years of use by a growing family, the primary bath is updated for 2020 while accomplishing goals including maximizing space usage and creating a bathroom that accommodates aging in place.
A contemporary craftsman style, chosen for this remodel, complimented the owners’ collection of antique furniture. We selected flush, inset cabinetry for both the vanity and the linen closet to coordinate with adjacent cabinetry in the primary bedroom. We blended modern convenience with classic-looking storage that incorporated modern niceties like outlets, drawers and pull-out trash cans. From the replica antique hardware to the seeded glass cabinet doors, we considered to ensure cohesion with the design style. While the casework is a natural red oak, the walls are clad in a white painted board and batten millwork to keep the space bright and airy.
DETAILS MATTER
The surrounding landscape is the star feature of the home; carefully placed windows make sure to connect the homeowners to the scenery while maintaining privacy. A framed-in mirror and window assembly above the vanity seamlessly connect the outside with the interior. The second window in the space is a high transom window in the shower. This placement allows for both privacy as well as east morning light into the space.
Re-engineering the floor structure allowed for a curbless shower. This, alongside blocking for future grab bars, gave the clients the opportunity to age in place. With limited floor space for a rug, a black marble tile bordering marble hex tile, highlights the floor.
PLAYFUL MEETS CLASSIC
While most of the materials in the space remained a timeless neutral palette, the shower walls feature bold, blue-glazed ceramic subway tiles. Additionally, the water closet includes a pop of whimsy with colorful wallpaper behind replica antique shelf brackets.
All in all, this contemporary craftsman primary bathroom is a space where both the aesthetics and function of every inch was carefully attended to in order for these homeowners to live large within a modest footprint.
